Two charged after Vic bottle shop shooting

Two men have been charged after an armed robbery at a Melbourne bottle shop that resulted in a third man being shot dead by police.

Two men have been charged over an attempted armed robbery at a Melbourne bottle shop that went wrong, ending with a person being shot dead by police.

The 48-year-old man was killed after pointing a sawn-off shotgun at the owner of the Park Orchards store in Melbourne's east on Sunday night.

A 42-year-old Mont Albert man and 50-year-old Ringwood East man were later arrested and have been charged with attempted armed robbery, police said on Tuesday.

Premier Daniel Andrews backed the actions of police.

"They're well trained, they're well equipped, they use lethal force only when they have to," he said.

Victoria Police's Professional Standards Command is investigating the shooting and the man's death was referred to the coroner.

The two alleged robbers faced court late on Monday and were remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on April 23.
