Two people killed when a light plane crashed into a Victorian paddock and exploded have yet to be identified.

A member of the public spotted an out-of-control plane around 11.30am on Saturday before the plane crashed into a paddock in Lancefield, north of Melbourne, and exploded.

Police said it appeared the two people on board had died, and they were working to confirm their identities.

Air Traffic Safety Bureau authorities are investigating.

Local police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the plane in the air in difficulty or who may have heard it to contact the Kyneton police station.
