Two dead in Brazil election rally attack

A government official has been shot dead after opening fire at a Brazilian election rally, killing a mayoral candidate and his bodyguard.

A mayoral candidate and his bodyguard have been killed and a deputy state governor has suffered serious injuries in an attack on a election rally in the Brazilian city of Itumbiara.

The attacker opened fire in Itumbiara, southwest of the capital Brasilia, on Wednesday before being shot dead by security guards.

The assailant, whose motive remains unclear, was later identified as an official with the Itumbiara municipal government.

Brazilians go to the polls on Sunday in municipal elections that are considered to be a test of the popularity of the country's new president, Michel Temer.
