Two dead on Victoria's roads

An elderly man has died after being hit by his own car, hours after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Melbourne's West Gate Bridge.

Two people have died within eight hours on Victoria's roads, with one crash causing traffic chaos into Melbourne.

An 81-year-old man died after he got out of his car while it was still in reverse and was hit in St Leonards about 3.30pm on Monday.

Earlier, a motorcyclist died in a crash with a truck on the West Gate Bridge, closing off inbound traffic for four hours.

The bridge was closed with diversions in place after the collision just before 8am on Monday.

Police say the truck driver, who was not injured, stopped and helped.

VicRoads reported delays for some time across the West Gate Freeway and Western Ring Road after the bridge reopened.

Major detours such as Somerville Road, Ballarat Road and Footscray Road also had heavy traffic.

Victoria's provisional road toll is 264 - 34 higher than for the same period in 2015.
