Two families rocked by NSW highway crash

A woman injured in a NSW crash that claimed the lives of a mother and her twin boy on their way to school reportedly had twins at the same school

A tight-knit community on the outskirts of Sydney is in mourning after a fatal head-on crash involving two mothers whose twins attended the same school.

Seven-year-old Sienna Bullock remains in a stable condition in hospital after the Hume Highway crash killed her 49-year-old mother, Julie, and twin brother, Hudson, on the school drive to Wollondilly Anglican College on Tuesday morning.

In a tragic twist, News Corp Australia reports the 49-year-old driver of the Holden Astra that slammed into the Bullock's 4WD is also a mother of twins who attended the same school.

The college has issued a statement asking the community "to support both families involved".

"Our college community is deeply saddened and shocked by the loss of Hudson Bullock and his mum Julie, much loved by our community," the statement on the school's website reads.

"Please continue to uphold Sienna in prayer."

People have been leaving messages of condolences on social media and a gofundme.com page which has so far raised $36,000 for the Bullocks' medical and funeral bills.

"I knew Julie Bullock," Lyndall Julie said on Facebook.

"A wonderful and vibrant woman who will be missed along with her son."

Ms Bullock died at the scene with emergency services working to free the twins from the wreckage, while Hudson died on arrival at Liverpool Hospital.

The Holden Astra driver is in a stable condition at Liverpool Hospital, a spokeswoman told AAP on Thursday.

It's believed her car left the northbound lanes of the highway at Pheasants Nest, south of Sydney, before slamming into the Bullock's Mazda and leaving it overturned on a bushy embankment.

Police have not confirmed this, however.

The community's Wilton Anglican Church stayed opened late on Wednesday night for people "to come and sit, pray, grieve or talk to someone".

"In the wake of the tragedy ... it's important for our community to grieve together and support each other. And of course to pray for and support Darren and Sienna as we're able," Reverend Ben Boardman said in a post on the church's Facebook page.

A devastated Darren Bullock is at his daughter's bedside at The Children's Hospital in Westmead, the Seven Network reports.
