A man and a woman have been hospitalised with burns after a boat exploded near Newcastle.

Two people have been hospitalised with burns after a boat exploded near Newcastle.

Police were called to a yacht club at Toronto in the Lake Macquarie area at around 10.30am (AEDT) on Saturday.

They have since been told that a 30ft boat exploded, injuring a 38-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man.

The woman suffered burns and two fractured ankles, while the man suffered burns and a possible fractured ankle.

The woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition, while police say the man is in a stable condition.

NSW Fire and Rescue officers extinguished the fire and initial investigations indicate the explosion was not suspicious.
