Two killed, 10 injured in Mali UN attack

At least two peacekeepers have been killed and ten others wounded during an attack on a United Nations base in northern Mali.

At least two peacekeepers have been killed and ten others wounded during an attack on a United Nations base in northern Mali, the UN mission in the volatile West African nation says.

Unknown attackers fired mortars at the mission's camp in Aguelhok in Kidal region late Thursday, the peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA) said in a statement.

The death toll could rise, as some of those wounded sustained serious injuries, the statement read.

Mali's north has experienced regular flare-ups of violence and attacks on peacekeepers and Malian soldiers in the wake of a 2012 military coup that saw separatist rebel groups and later al-Qaeda associated militants take control of the region.

French and African military operations, alongside the Malian army's efforts, scattered militants and restored government control over the area, but rebel activities and military operations continue in some areas, despite the signing of various peace agreements.
