Two killed in NT island community fighting

A large community disturbance at Angurugu on Groote Eylandt, east of Darwin, has reportedly claimed two lives with many others injured.

Two men have reportedly been killed and others injured in community fighting on Groote Eylandt, east of Darwin.

NT Police says it is "responding to a large community disturbance at Angurugu in Groote Eylandt".

"There are reports of injuries and police from Darwin are currently en route to assist," it said in statement on Friday.

"Police are working with the community to restore calm."

The ABC reports two men have been killed and another flown to Darwin for treatment.

Groote Eylandt is the largest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria and has a population of about 1500.

NT Police say they will hold a news conference on Saturday morning.
