Two people have been arrested by counter-terrorism police in North Melbourne following a police operation, but authorities have insisted there is no "current or impending threat to the community".
Victoria Police confirmed he counter-terrorism force was called to Queensberry St on Friday afternoon, but declined to provide further details.
"The Joint Counter Terrorism Team Melbourne can confirm it is conducting operational activity in North Melbourne," the statement read.
"We can confirm two people are currently assisting with enquiries."
On Friday night, the Australian Federal Police released a statement that the Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) had conducted a routine operation in North Melbourne.
"As part of this operation, a search was conducted at a residential property on Bedford Street," the statement read.
"This operation is not linked to a specific incident and is part of the JCTT’s ongoing intelligence gathering.
"It is also not linked to any imminent threat and the community should be assured that there is no ongoing risk as a result of this operation."
Video from the scene appears to show a man dressed in a forensic jumpsuit being led away from St Mary's Church.
The Australian Federal Police said the operation was not related to the church.
