Two UK tourists abducted in Congo released

Two British tourists who were kidnapped, along with their driver, in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been released, the UK government says.

Two Britons held hostage in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been released, Britain's foreign minister Boris Johnson says.

They were kidnapped with their driver on Friday while visiting the Virunga National Park.

"I pay tribute to the DRC authorities and the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation for their tireless help during this terrible case," Johnson said in a statement on Sunday.

A park ranger was killed during the kidnapping, which took place near the village of Kibati just north of Goma.

Boris Johnson didn't offer any further details. He added: "My thoughts are now with the family of Virunga Park ranger Rachel Makissa Baraka who was killed during the kidnapping, and with the injured driver."

Virunga is home to about a quarter of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, and the work of protecting them has proven dangerous.
