A man has been accused of killing his dog with an axe in Western Australia's south a day after a cat was separately found with a maggot-infested wound from an arrow shot through its neck.
Police said the 61-year-old Nulsen man attacked his two-and-a-half-year-old Labrador Border Collie cross with an axe on Saturday and the pet later died from its injuries.
He was charged with cruelty to animals and is due to appear in Esperance Magistrates Court on May 15.
In an unrelated incident, a cat with an arrow through the back of its neck was handed into an Ellenbrook vet after it was found lying on a road.
The RSPCA said the cat's wound appeared to be about two days old and was riddled with maggots.
Named Beau by his rescuers, the cat is expected to make a full recovery.
"Apart from a stiff neck for a while, the arrow didn't hit any vital nerves as far as we know," an RSPCA spokesman told AAP.
"He's only lost one of his lives, he's still got eight left."
The animal welfare group said it had received several leads in its investigation after posting about the attack on Facebook.
