Two women in their 70s have been killed after their car was slammed by an express train and crushed against a station platform in Melbourne.

The crash happened at the Union Road level crossing in Surrey Hills shortly before 4pm on Wednesday.

Police have not confirmed how it happened, but that the women in the car were aged 71 and 73 and both were from Camberwell.

The mangled wreck of their black Hyundai was wedged between the station platform and the train.

Police closed off the level crossing, station platforms and a pedestrian underpass, while blue tarpaulin's were put up to shield parts of the scene.

The car was freed from the train by firefighters using heavy machinery and the two women were found inside.

A man named George, who works at a Union Road barber shop just metres from the level crossing, told AAP he heard a bang, but did not realise a train and car had crashed until a customer came in.

He went to the station platform and found dozens of people taking photos of the accident on their phones.

"The car was sandwiched," he said.

The Belgrave and Lilydale lines have been suspended and buses a replacing trains between Camberwell and Box Hill railway stations for most of the night.

"Expect the line will remain closed for several hours due to the severity of the accident at Surrey Hills," a Metro Trains tweet says.
