Two women have been rescued after spending the night trapped on a rock ledge in Lake Macquarie during an evening walk.
The two 27-year-old women set off from Merewether Beach to Redhead Beach at about 4.30pm on Wednesday but became trapped in the difficult terrain as the light faded.
They phoned a friend at 6.30pm who contacted police at 11pm when they failed to return.
Police found the women on a rock ledge above the waterline near Dudley Beach shortly after 11.30pm and early on Thursday morning, winched a paramedic with supplies and a radio to their location.
The women were walked out by the paramedic and police rescue officers about 6.30am, taking about an hour and a half to reach safety.

One of the women was suffering from mild exhaustion but the pair were otherwise unharmed.
