Two women and a dog have been rescued from a car in floodwater on the NSW mid north coast.

The trio was stranded in a causeway at Billinudgel on Sunday afternoon when plucked to safety by State Emergency Service volunteers as heavy persistent rain continued to fall in areas from Port Macquarie up to Lismore.

The rescue was the first as a result of this week's heavy rainfall, SES spokesman Phil Campbell told AAP on Sunday.

"There's only been one flood rescue, which is really good news," he said.

There are flood watches on at least seven rivers on the mid north coast up to the Northern Rivers region, with Mr Campbell saying the Tweed, the Wilsons, the Richmond and the Brunswick rivers were of most concern.

More rain is predicted on Monday and Tuesday with conditions expected to worsen.

"The advice from the bureau is that the worst is still to come," he said.

"Tuesday is the day of greatest concern for us at the moment."

More than 210 millimetres of rain fell over the Richmond and Wilsons River valley during the weekend.

The SES responded to 350 calls for help in 48 hours, with most about leaking roofs, sandbagging properties and damage caused by fallen trees and branches, with Lismore and the far north coast the worst affected areas, Mr Campbell said.

Together with the Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue, local police and councils, the SES was preparing on Sunday for two more days of rainfall and possible flooding.

"We are waiting for what the weather will do," Mr Campbell said.

"We are working to make sure that everyone is prepared and emergency services are also prepared."

Lismore, which was badly hit by floods at the end of March after Queensland's cyclone Debbie brought unprecedented rain to northern NSW, had 190mm of rain in the 48 hours to Sunday evening.

Evans Head copped more than 257mm in the same period.
