Typhoon Kompasu heading to northern Japan

The northern Japanese island of Hokkaido is being pounded by torrential rain and strong winds as Typhoon Kompasu approaches.

Typhoon Kompasu is approaching the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido bringing torrential rains and strong winds to the region.

The heavy rain caused flooding in the city of Kitami, leading authorities to issue an evacuation order to about 3000 residents, Hokkaido Newspaper reported on Sunday. No injuries were reported.

The city of Akabira saw a record 175mm of rain over the past 24 hours and Kamikawa town recorded 146.5mm, the paper said.

About 350 train services were cancelled on the island due to the bad weather conditions, the paper said.

The eleventh typhoon of this season is project to make landfall on Hokkaido later in the day, with the Japan Meteorological Agency warning of thunderstorms, mudslides, high waves and swollen rivers in Iwate prefecture and Hokkaido.

The typhoon was 70km east-north-east of Miyako city as of noon (1300 AEST), travelling north at 35km/h, carrying maximum sustained winds of 64.8km/h and gusts of 90km/h, the agency said.
