More than 40 flights were cancelled and another 350 delayed after Typhoon Merbok pounded Hong Kong.

Ten people required treatment during the storm according to Hong Kong's hospital authority, while around 240 others sought refuge in government designated shelters to escape the effects of the storm on Monday night.

The government confirmed on Tuesday it had received no reports of flooding or landslides.

The Hong Kong Observatory said that the typhoon was about 200km north-northeast of Hong Kong on Tuesday morning and moving at approximately 18km/h across the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.

It also said heavy rains and strong winds would continue in Hong Kong throughout Tuesday morning.
