U20s Wallabies call in Reds trio amid woes

Queensland Reds players Hamish Stewart, Jordan Petaia and Harry Hockings have joined the Junior Wallabies for the under-20s World Rugby Championships.

It's not how they expected to spend their Thursday, but three Queensland Reds players will be pulling on Wallabies jerseys to face off against New Zealand in the World Rugby under-20s championships.

Injury woes have led Hamish Stewart, Jordan Petaia and Harry Hockings to get the a last-minute call up for the Junior Wallabies' last pool game of the tournament.

It's a must-win game for Australia, who are placed second in pool A on six points, behind New Zealand on 10 points.

The three are filling gaps left by winger James Ramm, who has broken his hand, and Trevor Hosea and Len Ikitau who have both suffered tournament-ending knee injuries.

The trio were on a plane to France on Sunday, the day after the Reds went down 52-41 to the Waratahs.

Coach Jason Gilmore says he has no hesitation starting them in the match, but they will have to bring their own to the group, who have been together since January.

"They're highly-skilled players, when you've got highly-skilled players they're competitive and they've got a competitive nature to win games and dominate," he told rugby.com.au.
