Uber passenger accused of punching driver

An Uber passenger is facing an assault charge after allegedly punching his driver and stealing his car on the Gold Coast.

An Uber customer has been accused of punching his driver in the face and stealing his car after a fare dispute on the Gold Coast.

Police say the 26-year-old man assaulted the driver, 23, about 3am (AEST) on Sunday at Surfers Paradise.

It's alleged the passenger kicked the doors of the stationary car, punched the driver in the face and chased him down the street before stealing the car, which was found damaged nearby.

He'll face the Southport Magistrates Court later this month, charged with assault and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
