The UN human rights office says Burundi is "slipping closer to the edge" as killings, arrests and detentions increase following last month's disputed re-election of President Pierre Nkurunziza.

Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, urged all sides on Friday "to resume dialogue before the situation spirals completely out of control".

Burundi has been hit by violence since April when the ruling party announced that Nkurunziza would seek re-election for a third term.

Protesters say the constitution limits the president to two terms, but supporters say he was legally allowed a third term.

Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva that at least 96 people have been killed since April, mostly opposition supporters, and some 600 people have been arrested and detained.
