The UN Security Council has called for an immediate and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza to allow for urgent aid to reach civilians.

The 15-member Council released a statement shortly after midnight local time on Sunday (1400 AEST) calling for the truce between Israel and Hamas.
