UN chief encourages MH17 justice talks

Representatives of the MH17 investigation team nations have met in New York to discuss a way forward on prosecutions.

Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says the nations involved in the MH17 investigation have resolved to consider all options to see the perpetrators brought to justice.

Ms Bishop met with representatives of joint investigation team nations - Belgium, Ukraine, Malaysia and the Netherlands - in New York on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST) to discuss options including a treaty-based international court, national prosecutions and a possible return to the UN Security Council to get a resolution.

"(UN Secretary-General) Ban Ki-moon certainly encourages us to pursue ways to hold the perpetrators of this atrocity to account and we'll continue to do that," she told reporters in New York.

The Malaysian Airlines flight was downed over eastern Ukraine in July 2014, resulting in the deaths of 298 passengers and crew.
