An EU plan to return migrants from Greece to Turkey could violate international law for various reasons, UN human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein warns.
"Among my concerns is the potential for collective and arbitrary expulsions, which are illegal," the UN high commissioner for human rights said on Thursday.
Policies that prevent the assessment of each asylum seeker's case violate international and European laws, he said, adding that returning Syrian refugees to Turkey, Lebanon or Jordan would expose them to unbearable living conditions.
"I urge the EU to adopt a much more rights-compliant and humane set of measures on migration at next week's summit," Zeid told a session of the UN Human Rights Council.
