The UN's Special Rapporteur on Torture says he's not satisfied with Australia's response to his report criticising its asylum policy.

In a report to the UN's Human Rights Council last month, Juan Mendez found that aspects of Australia's asylum policies breached the International Convention Against Torture.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott rejected that report, adding that Australians were tired of 'being lectured to by the UN'.

Mr Mendez says Australia's written response outlined its policy very clearly, but failed to address individual cases he highlighted.

He told Rachael Hocking, Australia has failed to live up to its obligations under international law.
