Unfair schools funds 'got my goolies': PM

The prime minister has secured a big win on school funding and is looking forward to taking a little break with wife Lucy during the winter recess.

For someone who had little sleep, Malcolm Turnbull strode into a press conference at Parliament House on Friday morning absolutely beaming.

"Good morning," he said chirpily to reporters.

There was a reason behind the grin.

Just after 2am his government secured parliament's tick of approval for its so-called Gonski 2.0 schools funding package.

"Inconsistent and unfair school funding gets my goolies - or it got my goolies until 2 o'clock this morning when we changed it and we made it right," he had told Sydney's Jonesy and Amanda, WSFM101.7.

The win capped off another marathon late-night sitting of federal parliament, which now breaks for the long winter break.

Mr Turnbull will be celebrating with a short holiday.

"I am going to take a little time off with Lucy," he said.

After that the prime minister heads off to Germany for the G20 leader's summit.
