Unheralded Grundy set for 250th AFL game

Heath Grundy will finally have some time in the spotlight, some 250 games into an AFL career that started on Sydney's rookie list.

All eyes will be on Grundy when the Swans host West Coast in an SCG blockbuster between two top-four teams expected to progress deep into September.

The milestone man is among the most well-respected players at the SCG, with teammates and coaches pointing to his work ethic, consistency and capacity to shutdown some of the league's best defenders.

Outside the club, the 32-year-old is among the most underrated and unheralded players in the league.

Grundy has never been part of the All-Australian squad. Even by defender standards, he has a low profile and attracts remarkably few accolades for a player so skilful.

"I think part of it is he's so understated, but that's what we love about him," Swans great Jude Bolton said.

"His contribution has been immense. You just know what you're going to get from Reg, he's been a pillar in defence for so many years.

"He's just so selfless and he's also recreated himself. I can still remember he first came to the club and was that lead-up half forward, it's unbelievable for him to have done what he's done."

Grundy will become just the eighth player to bring up 250 games with Sydney, joining a list boasting Bolton, Adam Goodes and Jarrad McVeigh.

Sydney defender Harry Marsh was just 11 years old when Grundy was taken with pick No.42 in the 2005 rookie draft.

Marsh now regards Grundy as a mentor.

"Reg has been massive for me and he's such an important part of the team. He's one of the most consistent players I've ever seen and it's not an easy job, he gets the biggest bloke every week," Marsh said.
