Unions walk out of Vic Labor conference

Victorian unions walked out of the state Labor conference but returned for Premier Daniel Andrew's speech.

Union officials have vowed to continue protests over disability support privatisation following a walkout at Victoria's state Labor conference.

The Health and Community Services Union rallied outside the conference on Saturday morning before Premier Daniel Andrews delivered his speech.

The move was sparked by HACSU's anger over Victoria's plan to contract out disability services, which the union says went against a pre-2014 election promise.

"It was absolutely brilliant," union spokesman Joe Taylor told AAP of the protest where HACSU was supported by about 100 delegates from other unions.

Mr Andrews used his speech to announce an independent registration and accreditation scheme for the state's disability workforce.

The scheme was a "step forward", Mr Taylor said.

"But, still, our view is they have to maintain the choice of public disability services," he said.

The union has been campaigning against Labor in marginal seats and will continue community protests.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten was also due to attend the conference.

It comes as former prime minister Paul Keating takes aim at the party's current agenda in a new biography.

"The Labor Party today has not taken ownership and leadership of its own creation," he says in a passage published by The Australian on Saturday.

"That is, the huge and wealthy middle-class economy which Labor exclusively created."

The state Labor conference continues on Sunday.
