UN humanitarian affairs chief Valerie Amos is stepping down from her post, a spokesman for the UN has announced without citing a specific reason for her decision.
Amos, 60, has served as UN under secretary general and emergency relief co-ordinator for humanitarian affairs since 2010, and has led efforts to assist people affected by conflicts and natural disasters.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon praised Amos for her tireless work noting that "for her, people have always come first".
"I would like to express my utmost gratitude for her outstanding service to the United Nations, the humanitarian community and people in need," Ban said in a statement.
