Uranium miner to move when demand improves

North American uranium miner Cameco plans get on with its Yeelirrie and Kintyre projects in Western Australia when demand for uranium improves.

North American uranium miner Cameco plans to advance its West Australian projects when demand picks up.

The company says it is frustrated by roadblocks to uranium mining in Western Australia, particularly from the West Australian Labor party which may stop new uranium mines from going ahead if elected.

Cameco Australia managing director Brian Reilly said uranium miners would need access to more Australian ports to export its products in the future.

"For Yeelirrie and Kintyre, our strategy in Australia is to advance these projects at a measured pace in line with market conditions and to get the projects ready for a time when the market demands new uranium production," Mr Reilly told a resource industry lunch.

Adelaide and Darwin were the only ports to accept uranium in the nation, he said.

He said nuclear had to be part of the world's energy mix in the future and the West Australian labor party had a policy which was "stuck in the 1970s".
