Urgent move to freeze wages of WA MPs

Legislation to freeze the wages of Western Australia's MPs and senior bureaucrats will be declared urgent and debated in parliament this week.

The WA government will move to urgently pass laws freezing the pay of MPs and senior bureaucrats, but has abandoned including local government chief executives and councillors as it won't make a difference to the state's ailing finances.

Premier Mark McGowan announced in May a $1000 per year cap for public sector wage increases, and also flagged keeping the salaries of MPs, senior public servants and senior local government figures static for the next four years in a bid to rein in ballooning debt.

On Tuesday, the state government said the legislation would be declared urgent and debated in parliament this week to try to save $16 million in the state budget.
