Virginia Tech geography professor John Boyer and his world regions class asked Mr Rudd for an online chat on Skype.
"We've heard you are the most socially networked and digitally interactive politician on the entire planet and we want to throw down the full world challenge to you," Professor Boyer said on YouTube.
"...This is a formal invitation for you to Skype with us so you can inform an American audience about what's going on and happening in Australia and Australia's place in the wider world."
The professor offered Mr Rudd a Foster's Lager for his time.
"I was skeptical about your offer until I saw free beer," Mr Rudd said on social media site, Twitter, on Wednesday.
The college's video scanned the lecture theatre where the students cheered and raised their arms like fans at a football game.
Prof Boyer and his class have had Skype chats with Burma's democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and have also asked US President Barack Obama to discuss American foreign policy.
