A US trade delegation is set to arrive in Beijing later on Monday for talks with their Chinese counterparts about how to ease their months-long trade spat.

The two-day visit follows a "ceasefire" in the trade war agreed by US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in December.

As part of the 90-day truce, Washington postponed a planned increase of tariffs on $US200 billion worth of Chinese imports from 10 per cent to 25 per cent.

The Chinese side has compromised by suspending additional tariffs on US cars and by buying US soybeans.

President Trump said Saturday the US is doing "very well" in its negotiations with China and that President Xi is "very much involved in the talks."

"In the meantime, we've taken in billions and billions of dollars in tariffs from China," he said.
The US accuses China of unfair trade practices including intellectual property theft and forced technology transfers.

Washington also wants Beijing to create a level playing field for foreign and domestic companies and end its state support for tech firms and state-owned enterprises.

Meanwhile, the trade war is slowing the world's second-largest economy. China reported weak industrial output data for November and the slowest retail sales growth in 15 years. Foreign trade has also slowed considerably due to the trade war.
