US diplomat Bill Richardson resigned Thursday from a Myanmar panel intended to ease communal tensions in Rakhine state, hitting out at government policy over the issue and decrying Aung San Suu Kyi's "absence of moral leadership" throughout the Rohingya crisis.

"It is with great disappointment that I announce my resignation," a statement released by Bill Richardson said, adding that the Suu Kyi-appointed board was likely to become a "cheerleading squad" for government policy rather than address the root causes of the crisis.
