US fighter jet crashes in Florida

An F-22 Raptor fighter jet crashed Thursday at the Tyndall Air Base in Florida, but the pilot was able to eject safely from the aircraft, a US Air Force statement said.

The accident occurred at 3:30 pm (2030 GMT) at the facility, located 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of Panama City, Florida.

The statement said the pilot was "under supervision" by medical staff at the base. Local officials closed a portion of nearby Highway 98 as a safety precaution.
