Golfer Lizette Salas, the daughter of Mexican immigrants, has strong thoughts about US President Donald Trump.

But the American bit her lip after taking the lead in the Australian Open at Royal Adelaide on Saturday.

Salas had previously slammed Trump's rise to the presidency.

"After last night, this country isn't what I thought it was. I ask that the whole world pray for the citizens who still believe in morals," she tweeted the day after Trump's election win.

Following her third round at the Australian Open, the Californian-born Salas was more circumspect.

"I like to stay away from politics," she said.

"I have expressed how I felt and I think everyone is entitled to express that.

"There is going to be a lot of change but I think our country is ready for it. I think we can come together and be stronger.

"But as far as my opinion about our new president, I don't really have anything to say."
