The debate over gun laws in the US is almost beyond comprehension to Australians who have had tough restrictions since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says.

Mr Turnbull was again praising Australia's laws as some of the strictest in the world after the deadly Las Vegas shooting, describing the issue of guns as a politically intractable problem in America.

"That somebody could legally buy all of these military-grade weapons and, you know, thousands of rounds of ammunition it seems inconceivable," he told ABC radio on Wednesday.
