Two US Navy fighter jets have collided and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina, leaving the flight crews of both wet but alive and unhurt, the Navy says.

All four crew members from the two F/A-18F Super Hornet jets were rescued by a passing commercial fishing boat on Thursday.

They were then transported by the Coast Guard to the hospital.

The circumstances leading up to the collision were not immediately clear.

The Navy said the jets were on a routine training mission.
