It's what happens when fact and fiction collide: police in New York have mistaken a movie set where actors where pretending to hold up a convenience store, for reality.

The police were responding to an emergency call from passers-by, who could see the actors, but not the cameras and film crew.

Nassau County police entered the store and ordered the 'gunman' to drop his weapon. The actor yelled out "it's a movie!" but didn't drop the fake gun. He was eventually disarmed by the officer, police say.

Independent filmmaker Fred Carpenter did not have visible signs of a film set in the front of the convenience store.

He was shooting the scene with a small high-definition camera from the rear of the building.

The actor being held up, who is the store's real manager, thought the arrival of the police was all part of the plan.

Nassau County Police have called for all potential filmmakers to alert authorities before undertaking shooting in public places.
