US scraps licence plate collection plan

The US Homeland Security Department has halted plans to get access to a private company's database of licence plate tracking information.

The Homeland Security Department has abruptly reversed course on plans to allow a private company to give it access to a US-wide database of licence plate tracking information.

The department said new Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson ordered that the contract proposal be cancelled.

The proposal said Immigration and Customs Enforcement was going to use the licence plate data in pursuit of criminal immigrants and others sought by authorities.

Homeland Security said the contract notice was posted without "the awareness of ICE leadership".

Johnson is ordering a review of the original proposal.
