US sheriffs defend holding video suspect

A US woman has been detained after a video shop - no longer in business - said she didn't return a rented copy of a Jane Fonda movie nine years ago.

A US sheriff's office says it had no choice but to detain a 27-year-old woman for allegedly failing to return a Jane Fonda movie to a video shop nine years ago.

Kayla Finley had gone to a sheriff's office in South Carolina last Thursday to report a domestic dispute, chief deputy Creed Hashe said.

But when her name was entered into a database, it showed an arrest warrant from 2005 for failing to return a rental copy of Monster-in-Law to a video shop - which is no longer in business.

Finley was detained overnight, before she appeared before a judge who released her on $US2000 ($A2,220) personal bond, pending a court date.

"We have to serve any warrant a judge issues," said Hashe, adding that there is no statute of limitations on arrest warrants.

Finley reportedly has told Fox TV affiliate WHNS that she is locked in a dispute with her ex-husband over the custody of their young children.

"I went to the police station to press charges of harassment and stalking," she wrote on the channel's facebook page, adding that the case involving the video was "a bogus charge" that she intended to contest.
