The family of Dylann Storm Roof, the 21-year-old charged with murdering nine people at a church prayer meeting in Charleston, South Carolina, is offering sympathy and prayers for the families of the dead.

A letter published in the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper says that the Roof family was "touched" by the words of the victims' families who were "offering God's forgiveness and love in the face of such horrible suffering" during Roof's first court appearance.

"Words cannot express our shock, grief and disbelief as to what happened that night. We are devastated and saddened by what occurred," the family says.
