US talk shows laugh at US-Aust showdown

In animated skit on Stephen Colbert's show a Donald Trump character slams Vegemite as garbage, AC/DC overrated and Australia as a desert full of jumping rats.

America's late-night talkshow hosts are having a field day with the fiery phone call US President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had last weekend.

The chat, which Mr Trump described in a tweet on Friday as a "civil conversation", was fertile fodder for the comedians and inspired CBS's The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to create an amusing animated skit.

"Who the hell would have guessed we'd have a problem with Australia?" Jimmy Kimmel asked on his show on America's ABC TV network.

"I'm pretty sure it's the only country that still kind of likes us."

On NBC Seth Myers followed a similar theme.

"How anti-social do you have to be to not get along with (expletive) Australia!" Myers yelled.

"Australians are the most laid back people on Earth."

Colbert made a plea to Mr Trump to "please don't pick a fight with Australia".

"They'll cut off our supply of UGGs, koala jerky and Hugh Jackman," Colbert said.

Colbert's animated retelling of the call between the two leaders, which has been posted to YouTube, begins with Mr Trump in the White House trying to call Mr Turnbull.

"Come on pick up! Pick up!" the Mr Trump character demands.

"G'day," a male Australian voice who eventually answers the phone says.

"Look Mr Prime Minister of Australia we're not going to take your stupid refugees," the president says in an aggressive tone.

"I won huge, big league.

"My inauguration crowd was the biggest in the whole history of the world.

"I talked to all of the best, most important people and you're by far the worst."

"Look .." the Australian voice says before being cut off.

"No, you look," the Trump character cuts in.

"Your country is a giant desert full of jumping rats and your toilets go the wrong way. Vegemite is garbage. AC/DC is overrated. That's not a knife, this is a knife"

The president pulls out a knife and drives it into his desk in the Oval Office.

"I'm sorry, this is an Outback Steakhouse," the Aussie voice eventually says.

"Oh," the surprised president says.

"I'll take a Bloomin' Onion."
