US tourist caught stealing from Auschwitz

An American tourist was detained at Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz after attempting to steal metal from the railways tracks, according to police.

An American tourist was caught trying to steal metal from the railway tracks at Auschwitz, the Polish news agency PAP reported on Sunday citing police.

The 37-year-old admitted the attempted theft to police and was released from custody until his trial, a police spokeswoman said.

He was detained after other visitors at the Nazi concentration camp noticed his behaviour and alerted staff.

Historians believe that Germany's Nazi regime murdered between 1.1 million and 1.5 million people at the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp during World War II. Most of the victims were Jews.

Trains brought victims to the camp, after which they were separated, with some sent immediately to the gas chambers while others became forced labourers.
