US traffic standoff seal gives birth

A wayward seal which caused two days of traffic jams on a busy highway in Northern California has given birth.

An elephant seal that tied up traffic in Northern California last week has given birth.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the birth happened on Saturday, five days after the 400kg seal first tried to cross a busy highway.

Rescue crews last Wednesday tranquilised the wayward seal that disrupted traffic for two days by trying to cross the highway several times.

Before the seal was tranquilised, a rescue worker in a kayak used a bullhorn to yell at the animal and try to scare her back into open water. The effort failed.

She was not injured.

Officials said they have no idea why the seal was determined to get away from the bay.
