Victoria wants US Vice President Joe Biden to open its new $1 billion cancer centre.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy said Mr Biden - who lost his 46-year-old son Beau to brain cancer last year - has been invited to open the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Melbourne.

"His office is currently working through whether or not his commitments would enable him to come," Ms Hennessy told reporters on Thursday.
