Two people in the US Virgin Islands have been accused of impersonating FBI employees and pretending to recruit people to work for the agency.

The US Attorney's Office said the suspects told people they were forming a new FBI taskforce in the US Virgin Islands and charged people for initial paperwork and training.

Officials accused them of defrauding people out of hundreds of dollars.

The US Attorney's Office on Friday identified the suspects as 30-year-old Alana Liburd of St John and 31-year-old Yamini Potter of St Thomas.

It wasn't immediately clear if they had lawyers.
