Van Damme's next act: animals Down Under

Action movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme wants the government to help him bring endangered animals to Australia to stay in new private sanctuaries.

The Muscles from Brussels wants to bring gorillas to Broken Hill.

Action movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme has a vision of establishing a series of animal sanctuaries around Australia to give new lives and breeding opportunities to endangered animals like rhinos, elephants and gorillas.

He met Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg on Thursday to discuss getting government assistance in bringing the animals in through zoo importation programs.

The idea is the animals will stay in zoos temporarily before moving to private holdings where they can live out their lives safely and away from people.

The scheme wouldn't cost the government anything, with philanthropy including by Van Damme himself funding specialist fences and veterinarians.

"It's wonderful to have you here to discuss important environmental matters, knowing how passionate you are about the preservation and conservation of Australia's native and indeed the world's native species," Mr Frydenberg told the star in welcoming him down under.
