Vandals have caused up to $300,000 in damage at a cemetery in South Australia's Clare Valley by smashing and pushing over headstones.

The damage to 46 headstones and memorials at Auburn cemetery in Clare was discovered by locals on Saturday.

Police believe the vandals entered the cemetery between Wednesday and Saturday and have asked anyone with information to come forward.

The damage bill is expected to be between $200,000 and $300,000.

Police are asking anybody with information about the damage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
