A woman who was seriously injured in a tourist bus crash in Vanuatu remains in a critical condition in a Brisbane hospital.

The 76-year-old American arrived on Tuesday after a bus carrying more than a dozen people crashed into a commuter bus near Port Vila, killing three locals.

Nine Australians and the American were injured and seven have been flown home to Australia, suffering fractures, lacerations, bruising and head injuries.

The group was holidaying as part of a cruise on P&O's Pacific Dawn.

Three people, including an 11-year-old boy who was the first to be evacuated from the scene, remain in a Noumea hospital.

The boy's condition improved on Wednesday and he was no longer critical, P&O said, but it remains unclear when he will be fit enough to fly home.

The youngest patient, a four-year-old girl, is being cared for at Brisbane's Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.

Her mother and brother returned with her but were not injured.

The cruise ship is due to dock back in Brisbane early on Saturday morning.
