The process to replace the disgraced former Archbishop of Adelaide Philip Wilson will take some time and will involve seeking the views of both lay people and clergy within the Catholic Church.
The final decision rests with the Vatican but candidates will be considered before a list of possible replacements is sent to Rome, the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Adelaide Bishop Greg O'Kelly said on Tuesday.
Bishop O'Kelly has taken over the duties of Wilson since his conviction for covering up child sex abuse.
Following Wilson's decision to resign, which was accepted by Pope Francis on Monday, a permanent replacement must now be appointed.
"There will be a process of inquiry. It will be operated by the Papal Nuncio," Bishop O'Kelly said.
"Decisions and opinions will be asked for among lay people, amongst clergy. It does take a while.
"Then there is a discernment process as to which names should go forward."
Bishop O'Kelly said he would not be a candidate for the position and the final decision would ultimately rest with the Pope.
