Vet turned senator retiring from politics

Liberal senator Chris Back says the heavy toll of travelling from West Australia has caught up with him, so he's retiring to spend more time with his family.

The first veterinarian elected to the Senate has opted to put himself out to pasture after eight years in parliament.

West Australian Liberal senator Chris Back will retire at the end of July to spend more time with his family.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott praised Senator Back's common sense perspectives, and said the parliament needed more people from broad backgrounds.
